TIPS & ADVICE
Modern Spins on Classic Cocktails
By definition a classic cocktail is a balance of simplicity, both in recipe
and presentation, and complexity of palette. The cocktail's quality is derived from the drink’s spirit base, which must be one or more of the premium classic spirits, whether gin, vodka, rum, whisky, tequila, or brandy.

As a base we will examine a few of these classic's and show you how you can easily use their foundation as a basis to build your new favorite or something entirely new.

1. Screwdriver: The screwdriver is a beautifully refreshing blend of 2 parts vodka and 5 parts fresh orange juice. This cocktail lays the foundation with a premium sprit (Vodka) gently stirred with a fresh fruit juice (Orange Juice). To spin this cocktail replace the vodka or spirit portion with another spirit i.e. rum, tequila or gin. And replace the orange juice or juice portion with another juice like cranberry, pineapple, lime, lemon or grape juice.

When applying other spirits the cocktails integrity will be best maintained with white or clear spirits like white rum or white tequila instead of the aged dark versions. Gin and Tequila have particularly strong herbal flavors which are best combined with citrus juices like lemons and limes. The acidity of the citrus helps balance the herbal strength of these spirits. A few examples of based off of the Screwdriver are: Rumdriver, Sapphire Sour, Tequila Sunrise or the Melon Ball.

2. Gimlet: With 2 parts Gin and 1/2 part lime juice this cocktail is meant to showcase the spirit and accent it with a touch of acidity in the lime juice. By simply switching the Gin with Vodka, Rum or Tequila the complexity of the drink changes dramatically from more of a dry or herbal to a more fresh and palatable yet less sophisticated cocktail. A few variations of the Gimlet are: Rum Gimlet, Tequila Gimlet and the Vodka Gimlet.
